All You Need Is Love

East Berlin, winter 1984

East Berlin, Winter 1984

Nice sentiment, the above headline, romantic, true in an abstract way. But I imagined that that this young couple also needed a room of their own (likely they were sharing an apartment with older relatives–tough times in the GDR) and sought urban anonymity (which could pass for privacy), in the cold, grey outdoors of walled-in East Berlin.

When I look at this image, as if a still from a film’s final scene, I wonder what happened to Franz and Eva–my movie, I can, with affection, name the characters–and to their unseen baby, sheltering under the green blanket, how their lives were changed by the momentous events that began on November 9, 1989, and by the accretion of everyday small things.
