In a surprise announcement yesterday, the Obama Justice Department said it would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court and acknowledged the obvious–that the law is blatantly unconstitutional. The usual Republican suspects responded, “Blah, blah, blah.”
And while this country is still legal lightyears away from marriage equality, score one for the side of the good guys (and gals).
The political is always personal and I take this issue particularly personally. My dear friends, cultural critic, Jeff Weinstein, and writer, poet and artist, John Perreault, were wed in Provincetown on December 6, 2008, and the approximately 1,100 legal rights that are conferred upon marriage, were suddenly and instantly theirs–after they’d been together for more than 30 years.
And contrary to the (seemingly satirical) screeching of the right, neither spending that wonderful celebratory wedding weekend on Cape Cod nor the continued success of Jeff and John’s union, has destroyed the “straight” marriages of the couples who attended (or even those of total strangers).
